Characteristics: A colorless to pale yellowy green liquid with a sweet, camphoraceous top note and warm, spicy, herbaceous undertone. An attractive perennial, almost evergreen shrub up to 24 inches high with a woody stem, small, lance-shaped leaves and purplish- to deep blue flowers.

Susanne Fischer-Rizzi’s great book “ Complete Aromatherapy Handbook”): Although hyssop is mentioned in the Bible, it probably does not refer to this herb but to a form of wild marjoram or oregano. Nevertheless, hyssop has an ancient medical reputation and was used for purifying sacred places and employed as a stewing herb. It is used principally for respiratory and digestive complaints, and externally for rheumatism, bruises, sores, earache, and toothache. It is also used to regulate the blood pressure, as a general nerve tonic, and for state of anxiety or hysteria.

Hyssop taken internally is excreted through the bronchial system.

For children it is best used in the aroma lamp. Adults may take 1 – 2 drops mixed with a spoonfull of honey. This oil warms the stomach and stimulates digestion. Hyssop also helps to strengthen the heart and lower blood pressure. Taken internally (or used in a sitzbath) it stimulates menstruation (therefore do not use during pregnancy!). It is mentally up-lifting and clarifying, helping us to organise our thoughts and improve concentration (meditation)... ideal for people involved in creative work.

Use as a powerful adjunct against tonsillitis (gargle with a few drops mixed in a glass of warm water) In skin care it is used on blemished skin, eczema and other skin conditions, infections, bruises (warm compress), and shock injuries(cold compress).

SPECIFIC SAFETY ADVICE

Not a beginners oil! Should not be taken internally at all (officinalis). Do not use this oil with small children, if you are epileptic or pregnant or have high-blood pressure!

GENERAL SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR ESSENTIAL OILS
Essential oils are potent plant extracts! Do not take any oils internally without consultation from a qualified medical practitioner. Keep all essential oils securely out of child’s reach. Do not apply undiluted to the skin. Always avoid mucous membranes and eyes. If you are pregnant or have any medical problem, use oils only under the proper guidance of a qualified medical practitioner. Use extreme caution when using oils for children and use only the gentlest oils at very low concentrations; it is safest to consult a qualified medical / aromatherapy practitioner. A skin patch test should be conducted prior to using any oil. Essential oils may attack plastics and varnished surfaces! And here’s another fact that most of us would be rather unaware of... many essential oils are highly flammable!
