External Application:

May Chang (litsea cubeba; aromatic litsea) is an evergreen tree or shrub 5-12 meters high. It is called "mountain pepper" (山胡椒) in Mandarin, although it is definitely not related to the Black Pepper plant, which is a vine. It produces a fruit which is processed for its lemony essential oil. The oil can also be extracted from the leaves, twigs and stems, but the quality would be much lower. Essential oil yields from the fruit are 3-5%.

Properties:

Antibiotic, antidepressant, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, deodorant, digestive, insecticidal, sedative, stimulant, stomachic, vulnerary.

Mixed with vegetable oil (7 drops of mandarin oil to 10ml of vegetable oil) as a body oil to prevent stretch marks (the best effect is achieved in combination with avocado oil), scarring, for the care of flabby skin and wrinkles, relaxing (cramped muscles), anxiety, balancing, calming, premenstrual syndrome, stomach, liver and gall bladder complaints.

Acne, colds, depression, dermatitis, flatulence, indigestion, insect repellant, oily skin, perspiration, poor appetite, stress, tissue toning, tonic. The insecticidal properties of this oil make it an appropriate substitute for Citronella oil, or suitable as an addition to an insect repellant.

Internal Application:

It is inhaled for nervous depression and taken for gastric ulcers or poor appetite. In skin care it is used for acne and excessive oil.

GENERAL SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR ESSENTIAL OILS
Essential oils are potent plant extracts! Do not take any oils internally without consultation from a qualified medical practitioner. Keep all essential oils securely out of child’s reach. Do not apply undiluted to the skin. Always avoid mucous membranes and eyes. If you are pregnant or have any medical problem, use oils only under the proper guidance of a qualified medical practitioner. Use extreme caution when using oils for children and use only the gentlest oils at very low concentrations; it is safest to consult a qualified medical / aromatherapy practitioner. A skin patch test should be conducted prior to using any oil. Essential oils may attack plastics and varnished surfaces! And here’s another fact that most of us would be rather unaware of... many essential oils are highly flammable!
