Jean Stodden Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir)

This Spätburgunder represents the pure, approachable side of Jean Stodden, widely regarded as one of Germany’s benchmark Pinot Noir estates. The winery is based in the Ahr Valley, Germany’s smallest wine-growing region and also one of its most northerly, sitting close to the absolute climatic limits for viticulture in mainland Europe.

Pinot Noir thrives here thanks to a unique combination of factors: steep vineyards, heat-retaining slate soils, and the moderating influence of the Ahr River. Without these elements, growing Pinot at this latitude would simply not be possible.

In the glass, this wine is charming, fruit-forward and beautifully balanced. Juicy red berries, gentle spice and a fresh, cool-climate lift make it an easy wine to enjoy on its own, yet versatile enough to pair effortlessly with simple, everyday dishes. Elegant rather than heavy, it often surprises blind tasters with a finesse that rivals many Bourgogne Rouge bottlings.

Jean Stodden is a truly artisanal producer, farming just 6.5 hectares and producing approximately 45,000 bottles per year across the entire range. The Stodden family has been cultivating vines since 1578, and today Alexander Stodden continues this legacy, crafting wines that combine ripeness, structure and unmistakable Ahr character.

The estate’s reputation is firmly established internationally, with consistent high ratings from leading German wine guides and standout performances in blind tastings — including top results against renowned Pinot-producing countries worldwide.

If you are looking to explore serious German Pinot Noir from a small, historic and highly respected estate, this is an excellent place to start.
